Seniors asking questions about tax relief

Collector of Revenue helping them understand their bills

St. Charles County—Concerned seniors have been calling on the phone and showing up in the lobby of the County Administration Building asking questions about their real estate tax bills.

Collector of Revenue Michelle McBride says the most-commonly asked question is why their senior tax credit isn’t bigger.

“Big things have little beginnings,” McBride says. “The state didn’t design this to be a big tax cut your first year, but you will be glad you signed up because the savings will only get bigger as the years go by and your home value continues to increase.”

The popular program rolled out in 2024 and now has almost 28,000 St. Charles County homeowners included. Under state law it’s designed to provide tax relief in the form of a tax credit to offset increases in your tax bill, except for the portion of your bill tied to pay the state and debt on voter-approved bond issues.

So far, the program has saved county taxpayers and estimated $5 million.

McBride is available to meet with the media and answer questions, to help seniors understand more about the program.
